A Microsimulation Model of a Congested Freeway using VISSIM
نویسنده
چکیده
A procedure for constructing and calibrating a detailed model of a freeway using VISSIM is presented and applied to a 15-mile stretch of I-210 West in Pasadena, California. This test site provides several challenges for microscopic modeling: an HOV lane with an intermittent barrier, a heavy freeway connector, 20 metered onramps with and without HOV bypass lanes, and three interacting bottlenecks. Field data used as input to the model was compiled from two separate sources: loop-detectors on the onramps and mainline (PeMS), and a manual survey of onramps and offramps. Gaps in both sources made it necessary to use a composite data set, constructed from several typical days. FREQ was used as an intermediate tool to generate a set of OD matrices from the assembled boundary flows. The model construction procedure consists of: 1) identification of important geometric features, 2) collection and processing of traffic data, 3) analysis of the mainline data to identify recurring bottlenecks, 4) VISSIM coding, and 5) calibration based on observations from 3). A qualitative set of goals was established for the calibration. These were met with relatively few modifications to VISSIM's driver behavior parameters (CC-parameters). Exploratory analysis of an optimal variable speed control system for a recurrently congested freeway bottleneck
This study presents two models for proactive variable speed limit (VSL) control on a recurrently congested freeway segment. The proposed model uses embedded traffic flow relations to predict the evolution of congestion patterns over the projected time horizon, and then computes the time-varying optimal speed limit to smooth traffic flows. To contend with the uncertainties associated with driver...
متن کاملA Comparison of the VISSIM and CORSIM Traffic Simulation Models
As transportation systems have become more complex and frequently congested, simulation modeling has gained recognition as an effective approach for quantifying traffic operations. Traffic simulation packages like CORSIM and VISSIM can address these types of network issues, and are frequently used as tools for analyzing traffic. However, there is little information available to the analysts app...
متن کاملFreeway capacity, saturation flow and the car following behavioural algorithm of the VISSIM microsimulation software
Freeways represent the best example of an unconstrained traffic flow system with high speed operations, limited access and egress opportunities and few factors to inhibit traffic flow. This road type can typically achieve the highest throughput of traffic per hour per lane across most metropolitan networks. As most regular limitations to free flow traffic conditions are removed from freeways, t...
متن کاملValidation of the Microscopic Traffic Flow Model VISSIM in Different Real-World Situations
This paper presents the possibilities of validating the microscopic traffic flow simulation model VISSIM, both on a microscopic and a macroscopic level. VISSIM implements a psycho-physical carfollowing model and thus provides a very realistic driving behavior. The complex model offers but also requires many model parameters that can be calibrated using measurement data from driving experiments....
متن کاملDevelopment of a Microsimulation Program to Study Freeway Ramp Merging Process in Congested Traffic Conditions
This work describes a micro simulation program that is developed to study freeway ramp merging phenomena under congested traffic conditions. First, the results of extensive macroscopic and microscopic studies are used to establish a model for the behaviour of merging drivers. A theoretical framework for modeling the ramp and freeway lag driver acceleration-deceleration behaviour is then present...
